Governing SuccessFactors Learning Open Content Network

Open Content Network connects third-party learning providers with SuccessFactors Learning. The key to understanding it is the difference between importing a provider's catalogue for administrators and making selected learning available to users.

From provider library to administrator catalogue

SAP documents provider configuration and an OCN content-synchronisation process. That process brings vendor-library information into the administrator's view. It gives the organisation material to manage, rather than automatically deciding that every learner should see every provider course.

The administrator then curates the content made available to learners. Provider integration and catalogue selection are therefore distinct stages: one supplies external material, while the other determines its place in the organisation's learning offer.

Launch and completion connect two systems

The documented experience includes launching learning at the provider site and reporting completion back into the Learning plan. The learner can consequently encounter content outside the LMS while the organisation still depends on a record returning to its learning environment.

That relationship explains why a visible course alone is not the whole integration. Catalogue metadata, access to the provider and completion reporting describe different parts of the journey. A successful catalogue synchronisation does not independently establish that all of them work for a given population.

Content continues to change after import

External providers can update their libraries. The organisation therefore has an ongoing relationship between the external catalogue and the content it has selected, including how changes and withdrawals are handled.

The cited SAP documentation establishes the synchronisation, curation and launch/completion model. It does not assign the organisation's ownership or confirm every provider configuration. The application guidance below builds on that model, rather than treating a connected provider as a self-maintaining catalogue.

LT Horizon DECISION BRIEF
Answer

SAP documents how Open Content Network imports provider libraries for administrators to review and make available to learners, then handles launch and completion reporting. Agree who selects courses, handles provider updates and checks that completions return correctly.

Who should care

Learning architects, learning management system administrators, content teams, procurement teams and consultants integrating external learning providers.

Recommended action

PLAN — document OCN end to end: provider configuration → automatic vendor-library synchronisation → administrator curation → learner access → launch → completion → update/retirement handling.

What changed

No new SAP product release is asserted in this record. This brief explains how to select, maintain and track external content through Open Content Network.

Why it matters

A technically connected provider can still create catalogue sprawl, stale content and unclear ownership. Synchronisation into the administrator view does not mean every vendor course should automatically reach every learner.

Implementation implications

Prerequisites

Define provider ownership, OCN configuration, catalogue curation rules, launch behaviour, completion expectations, content update/retirement ownership and reconciliation processes before go-live.

Architecture implications

Provider courses first appear in the administrator view, then selected courses become available to learners. Agree who reviews each stage and handles updates or withdrawals.

Risks

Assuming automatic synchronisation equals automatic learner curation; weak retirement ownership; duplicate content; broken launches; and incomplete completion reconciliation.

Testing implications

Test new course sync, metadata changes, curation, launch, completion return, access expiry and provider-content withdrawal with controlled learner populations.
